Did you ever wonder about how you can help out at nursing homes, retirement communities or facilities that house and help the elderly and senior citizens? There are many volunteer opportunities at facilities like these. You can visit to lend an ear or visit to lend a hand. No matter how you want to help, you can probably find an organization that is willing to accept your willingness to volunteer.
One way many people never think about when it comes to helping out at an assisted living facility or nursing home, is by donating items. We are not talking about clothing donations like you might make to an organization like Goodwill. Instead, I am talking about donating items that can help the residents stay busy and entertain themselves during their stay. Many of these organizations would gladly accept donations of reading materials, games, cards, art supplies, movies and other recreational and entertainment items. The residents would appreciate them as well.
And if you are willing to donate some of these things to a nursing home or assisted living facility, then you can probably find others who would donate as well. In that case, why not start your own movie, book or game drive. Find some other volunteers who will help you organize a drive to get as many of these items as possible from other community members. Then you could make an even bigger impact and help even more senior citizens and businesses that help care for them. Make this an annual holiday event and you could even bring more cheer to them during a time like Christmas. These kinds of items will help them pass the time and will be a volunteering option that could make a big impact on their lives.
